Fuel pump question

so, went for a drive with Ms Triss and about 5 times I accelerated and she bogged down and then recovered. It seems to me that this is a fuel delivery problem - though I will be checking the plugs - anyway, it has me thinking about breaking down and getting an electric pump. I know we have discussed this over and over again but, bear with me.

If I go for an electric pump, can I keep the mechanical pump as a reserve?

This link implies I can keep them inline:

or, could I disconnect it and run it dry in case I need it.

If it recovers after it bogs, I wouldn't suspect the fuel pump. Check the oil in the dashpots.

I wouldn't run the mechanical pump dry. If you put them in series, I would run on the mechanical and have the electric on a switch as a backup.

I had this same issue last summer on my 67 Sprite. It ended up being a fouled plug and low oil in one of the carbs. I noticed it boging around 60 MPH, new plugs and a little oil in the carbs works great now. If only all fixs were that easy.
 
Inline should be fine but that specific pump provides too much pressure.

An Airtex works well, and should be OK inline as well.

I got the Airtex if I recall, nice and quiet. I tried the Facet and it was obnoxious with its noise.

JP,
You probably know this but just in case, if the diaphragm in the mechanical pump were to fail, you would then be pumping fuel into the crankcase, with unfortunate results.
