Fuel pump question

I'm helping a friend out with a Triumph question -- he's replacing the fuel pump on his TR6, and he and I can't recall how the lever on the pump sits inside the engine. Does it slip under the cam and hooked behind it, or does it simply get pushed up against the cam and side on the outside? It's been several months since Greenie got a new fuel pump, and I simply can't recall. Thanks!

Pushed up to the cam is how I remember it. The lever pretty much lines itself up to where it needs to be.

Good luck,

Some say to take care to be sure the lever is properly against the cam but I've never had one want to fit up anything but the correct way (as noted, pushed against the lobe).

BTW -- welcome back BritBox, you were away for ahwhile. I always enjoy your website & the notion of 'driving season'.

I agree with the previous posts. This past spring I replaced my aftermarket fuel pump with another aftermarket. I didn't like the results so I got an origional and rebuilt that one with good result. In fact it put out too much pressure so I had to add additional gaskets per the bently manual to get the pressure down to spec.

Geo Hahn,

Thanks, you are very kind. There have not been enough hours in a day or days in a week to do the things I want to do--although I always find time to drive The Sporty Red Car! I just updated both my site and blog in the last week, and hope to add even more content to them, and also contribute regularly to this excellent forum.

Regards,

Can I ask where you got the parts to rebuild the old one?

I have an old pump from my Spitfire I would like to rebuild, it has a leaking diaphragm. Other than that its great. I don't care much for the aftermarket replacement.

Thnx

Do you recall if it came with the seal for the diaphram shaft. That happens to be what I'm looking for for my original pump.

Harry,
I opened up the Bently manual to see if I could remember and It all came back. The part labeled H (diaphram) came as one assembly, I guess that the seal you are looking for is part of that. It also came with the inlet and outlet valves, filter and cover washer(rubber gasket).I don't remember if it had the diaphram spring but it probably did.
It was of good quality and did the trick for me.

Harry -- I don't think they have supplied those seals for many years and they are generally considered unnecessary for a 4-cylinder TR pump.

I have heard of some who use another seal for that spot (something off a Land Rover) but again... neither of my pumps (with priming levers) have that seal and I have never heard of someone having a problem with omitting it.
