Fuel Pump- Part 3

Installed new Bosch plugs gapped to .028
Car staggered, stuttered around the block
and barely got me back home. New plugs
appear to make no difference.

Have not yet installed the air filters.

It seems it cannot be bad gas. I've got 110
trouble free miles and am working on the same
original ten gallons.

The present problem developed literally overnight.
Without even opening the hood.

puzzled.

Nightfall near the equator update. 5:30 PM

Connected fuel line hoses to the Purolator Pro 12S elec pump.
Attached the testing gauge and got clackity clack 5.3 psi.
Thanks for the pump Don!!

Attempted a round the block drive. Rock steady up to 3500 rpm
in 2nd. Ran out of straight road in the hood.

Twice thru the hood- no problems. I then left the safety of
the hood sans cell phone.

One mile long, big double "S" curves near home. I banged them
pretty hard and got third wound as high as the road length
would permit before braking and downshift. Made a U-turn at
the poisoned gas station and banged it on home. Clacky clacking merrily along.

Warm idle still at 5 to 600 but I'm getting closer to solving the problem.

Any and all comments and/or suggestions are welcomed.
What is my next logical step?

thanks all,

Dale,

The oil could have fouled the plugs. Two to three ounces of oil in 10 gallons of gas will yield a 640:1 to 427:1 ratio, which should not foul the plugs that severely. Wire brushing the plugs could also have contributed to the fouling. If you poured the oil directly into the gas tank it would have sunk to the low point of the tank, where the fuel pick up is located. Initially on start up you would be pulling a very oil rich mixture out of the low spot, which could have caused the fouling. I pre-mix my 2 stroke mixture in a gallon can where I can shake it until the oil is dissolved into the gas, than I pour this into the boat on top of 1/2 of a tank, and than fill the rest of the tank with gas.

Glad to see you are making progress.

What is the current update?

Phil

I'm in agreement with Ron (tho not entirely) about the NGK's. For whatever reason, English cars don't seem to like the German plugs. Funny bit is: the Alfa runs 'em with no problems and fouls the NGK's or about anything else I put in it. Go figger.

Weird. My car likes Champions, fouls NGKs. My pocket book likes Champions too.

Yup, Romeos like Bosch and Lodge(but they're kinda hard to find anymore)....

I like Pauls idea, check for actual fuel pressure at 1500rpm, I think you will have very little. Is the pump itself getting lots of fuel???? Make sure there is no filter installed ahead of the pump, and be sure that all lines are fresh and clean. The last gremlin is a leaf in the tank droppen in by the brat next door(it really happened to me!)

Dale, Your problem is starting to sound like a similar problem that a guy who calls himself tarheel on the six pack forum had. after many weeks of checking everything out, it ended up, he had a torn carburator diaphram at the top end of one of his carbs, just a thought. Vince

<span style="color: #990000">So Ok!
I'm in a different time zone than most. I'm working when
you guys is still snoring away dreaming of triple carbs.

Tuesday Morning Crypt Car fuel pump testing.
Straight run, new fuel lines from gas tank to carb inlets.
No filters of any kind. Carbs off the car and cleaned twice
now in 110 miles. They are spotless inside.

Fuel pump pressure testing:

1. 800 rpm - warm engine- 3.0 psi fuel pressure
2. 1500 rpm - warm engine- 3.1 psi fuel pressure
2. 2000 rpm - warm engine - 3.2 psi fuel pressure
3. 3000 rpm - warm engine - 3.4 psi fuel pressure.

The Crypt Car really sounded like it wanted those
rpms spinning the tranny gears in the street.

Torn carb diaphram? very doubtful given the very
low mileage on Jeff Palya's professional rebuild.

All this morning with the head Doc - so maybe some
afternoon Crypty test drive for more miles on the pump?

later,

Good news Dale! Now, install an appropriate filter in line, check your pressure and drive that puppy!

NASA, all systems are green, looking good for lift off and 10....9....8.....
