Fuel Pump Maintenance Frequency

I have not found a recommended maintenance period for the fuel pump. I haven't touched mine for years and am starting to feel exposed. What do members recommend?
 
I have an older SU AZX1308 that is going on 15 plus years. I check it about once a year for flow rate. It still pumps around one pint in 30 seconds which is equal to it's rated flow rate of 15 gallons per hour. This means that the diaphragn has not hardened, the points are still in adjustment & working properly & the valves are not leaking. It stops when it builds pressure & there are no leaks.

Diaphragm life may depend on what additives are being put in the gas now days. If in doubt, replace it with a similar SU pump & keep the old as a spare.

Mine packed up 20 yards from home, no amount of spanner hitting would get it to move - it was dead.
I agree with Dave get another and keep one or the other as a spare. I also ride around with a spare coil - just incase.
 
I drove my Healey for about 7 years when the pump packed it up and no amount of hammering or even roadside points scraping would get it to go reliably.

Result my first tow truck experience in 30 years of brit car driving. Don't know the proper service interval, but do know that 7 years is too long.

Don't know if they are the same, but I pull the cap off the pump once a month and run a piece of matchbook cardboard through the points and give it a shot of electrical cleaner.... This can be done at the side of the road as well!
 
If anyone has one of the SU pumps that uses a diode type contact arc suppressor, and the pump ever gets connected reverse polarity, even for a few seconds, the diode will be silently destroyed. The only way that you will know that anything is wrong is that point life will be somewhat shorter than intended. There might be a very small burn hole in the side of the diode. New suppressors are readily available for either polarity pump.

I know this doesn't count, but I ran the orginal fuel pump in my 1960 BT7 without any maintenance what-so-ever(other than an occasional rap on the bulkhead) until I replaced it in 2000 when I converted to negative ground.
