Fuel pressure regulators

Yes- just don't buy it from Aircraft Spruce-- they are WAY cheaper at NAPA and you don't need aircraft certs.

28 bucks for a 40105 is not such a bad deal. Get a couple of the little rubber mounts, MB uses them for aircleaner mountings on the 104 engines. Make sure you've got a goood!! ground. Scrape paint on the ground. Biggest reason why these pumps fail, I've found, is loose ground.
 
Keep in mind, you might want one of the lower-pressure ones. The specified range of the 40105 is 3-4.5 PSI, so the one you get could end up closer to 4.5 PSI, which is probably a tad high. There are some that are rated a bit lower.
 
but then what's done with the existing mechanical pump? Does it need to be hollowed out, or removed completely and a blanking plate fabricated?

Make a blanking plate using the gasket as a model (I'm assuming you're referring to a 1500).

And for what it's worth, my race car has the pressure regulator set at around 2 to 2.5 lbs of pressure.
 
I have a Holley 12-804 on order. Does this require a return line? If not, does the constant back-pressure shorten the life of the mech. fuel pump?
