Fuel Gauge Problem

I have a sort of similar problem with the petrol gauge in my 100.
When my tank is full it reads half full and when it is empty it reads one quarter full. I have run an extra cable from the tank sender to earth ("ground" to you blokes)with no improvement. From which terminal on the gauge should I run a cable to earth? I will also look at the MGA site.
This is only a minor irritation as for years the gauge didn't work at all, wasn't even connected! I got pretty good at finding a service station in a hurry when I heard that familiar buzz from the starving S.U. pump!

The "terminal" at the gage would be the metal gage mounting - holding screw at the U bracket. At the tank end it would be one of the sender mounting screws.
