Fuel Gauge Adjustment

Greetings,

Yes, I have read how to do it, but I just wonder if somebody on the forum has actually adjusted their fuel gauge. Mine only goes up to just over 3/4 when full. (even when I OVER filled it and had gasoline AT the cap) The empty side of the range is a lot closer to being correct and I doubt that I would try to do anything to that side of the gauge.

Any hints, tips, or suggestions would be appreciated. I guess what I REALLY want to know, is it easy to do and worth the effort?

Mine only registers to just over 3/4 full too. Go figure. This doesn't bother me nearly as much as the spastic speedometer, because I just fill up at 1/4 tank, but not sure an officer would buy the story that I have a jumpy needle.

If the gauge is an easy fix, I'll add it to 'The List.'
 
Jaybird just "tap" it (the speedo of course) with a hammer perhaps? that'll make it so you can just turn it by hand to what ever speed you want.
(I'm joking of course.. as I don't have a real answer)
 
I haven't adjusted instruments unique to MGs, but I have adjusted fuel and temperature Smiths gauges. I found this to be an "iterative" thing where you need to have the float arm all the way up when you set the gauge needle to full... then have the arm all the way down when you set the empty point. Then you have to do it all over again for full... and empty several times until you get them both reading right. If there's a procedure published on how to do this quicker please post a link to it. I'd like to know for future reference. Thanks.
 
For those looking at the links above, the MGA site is useful for cars that that did not include the voltage stabilizer for the gauges. These would be early cars up to the mid-1960s. If the car has a voltage stabilizer for the gauges, the MGCARS.ORG link provides some limited information. If anyone has any more links for calibrating the later type gauges please post them. Thanks.
