Do I really need to run a pre filter for an electric fuel pump.
Can I just use a regular filter before the pump and call it good
 
I use a regular filter...but, then, I don't have a full-flow, high pressure, bypass system for EFI.
I am not certain how a regular low-flow unit would work....or whether the suction of that bilge pump would suck the innards out of it.
 
only about 45PSI at the reg, but the pump pulls 70-80
 
The stock TR8 FI just has a (fine mesh) screen on the pickup before the pump, then a filter after the pump.
 
Would the filter be better suited for before the pump?

That would help protect the pump as well, though it could also cause fuel starvation to the pump, which could also damage it. I guess the theory is the in-tank strainer catches the big stuff that is likely to kill the pump, but mine had fallen off.
 
I think it depends on the type of pump. Some pumps don't have a lot of pull pressure so having the filter before the pump may make it harder for fuel to flow.

I see your point though. I would like to keep the pump clean as well as the EFI.
 
Yes, and Triumph clearly wanted a good quantity of fuel flowing into the pump, as they used a 12mm (nearly 1/2") hose between the tank and pump.
 
I'm only using 5/16" though I am thinking 3/8ths to the pump as a supply and 5/16 after.

I figured it was. You are shooting for about the same pressures, though depending on what else you've done to the engine, you may not need as much volume as the 3.5 liter V8.
 
Don't think the HP will be but about 60% of my Wedge motor Darrell. Pressures are the same ,you are correct.
 
One potential problem (and I believe the reason most OEMs include only a coarse filter before the pump) is that any restriction to flow can increase the tendency of the fuel to boil (aka vapor lock).

I was thinking more of the stock TR8 FI engine. Hopefully your TR6 engine will be more than 60% of that!
 
A screen (or sediment bowl) type filter before the pump is a good idea IMO; followed by a paper element filter after the pump.

Don, the filters in the tank are sitting in fuel that is always moving and they get washed as sediment builds on them, so much that you probably never notice it. A strong filter before can block up solid or restrict as R mentioned and give you fits along the way until it completely shuts off.
