Glad to hear it wasn't a reals expensive fix. We all learn by others experience.
This should be a new topic but it fit here. I saw in the Vic-Brit cataloge that they have a "key" battery switch. If one changed out the stock shut-off it could slow a car thief???? I've been a little tight in the exhaust (also known as anal) since that car thieft discussed a number of months ago.

Glad to hear you got your old girl back on the streets again and that it was nothing serious. We've all learned form the experience.

Good day, friends,

I, for one, use the battery cut-off switch often. I like the idea that I can disable any current when I am not around the vehicle. I am not really sure what real utility this usage has, but I do know I was really happy to have it available when I had a short in the left rear tail light assembly in 1973 or so. I smelled wire insulation 'burning' and immediately used the cutoff switch. I was then able to find about a foot of burned wire that I was able to easily replace. Turns out the insulation was frayed or worn. Anyway, as I am not a real astute student of automotive electronics I have the idea that it makes sense to cut off the battery from the car wiring and therefore making it a little more theft proof and eliminating possibility of a short draining the battery or even possibly causing a fire. I hope one of you will be able to either set me straight or confirm my viewpoint? Anyway, I have used it every time I leave the car unattended and when it is 'stored' in the garage for a while.

I'll add my chorus to being glad it wasn't an expensive fix.

The #@*&# cut-off switch is definitely one of the weak points of the car. I used to have an awful time going out for a drive, stopping and then not being able to restart it to come home. The Mrs won't let me forget, either. It wasn't the ignition grounding that was the problem, but the resistance to starting current flow. I now have a new replacement switch. I too, get in and then realize I left the switch off.

It has two positive benefits though: anti-theft as mentioned and keeping the car from catching fire in the garage after you've gone in the house. Not that Lucas wiring would ever do so. Fortunately for the "4-seaters", it's "relatively" easy to get to.

On mine, I've switched to an alternator, but left the "ignition" light active. This little light remains on after the car has stopped until I turn the cut-off switch off. Kind of a reminder to do it. Of course, if I forget, it drains the battery over several days.

If the switch goes out again, I will just have to get a better switch.

Have "transported 3 patients (appendix, Fx'd ulna and well cracked shull) to hospitals [=ambulance).

Have extinguished FOUR car fires [Midget, Chebbie, FORD, and an A-H 100] (=fire truck).

To the best of my knowledge, DD-300 (John Chatham) IS a "Race Car"!!!

Incredible...Sharon...isn't it always that way...the smallest thing...the least suspected item...it cost you more to find out what the problem was then it was to fix it!

Oh, well...at least you're (as Gene Autry would say)...back in the saddle again...the weather is perfect for Healey driving...now you just have to worry about getting blow away in the wind...or drowned in our soon to come rains...

Just wanted to say that reading through all the theories proposed for this problem was heartwarming as well as educational. Great community. Only wish I lived in a climate where my recently acquired fulfillment could be driven right now.

Hi Henri,

Well, seeing as how this problem started right after I stopped to take a look at a nicely restored BJ8 for sale, I don't dare even think of looking at another Healey these days! Instead, had a very nice Thanksgiving, and spent the rest of the weekend driving the Healey as much as possible - in town and out to Huntington Beach and down Pacific Coast Highway one day. It was cloudy, and a few drops of rain fell. But you know what? It didn't last very long at all, and you don't even notice it, because it's great just being able to drive the car at all after reading the posts from members up north who have put their cars away until springtime!

And I agree with new member "canuck" - many thanks to a great bunch of people on the forum for all their help!

Maybe I'm one of those liars...but so far...I haven't had problems with my Healey...I drive it everyday almost...runs like a top...in fact runs better when used...the only thing that I've had to add to it...is gas...so much for LBC humor...
