Fuel Cap Removal?

Sorry for the newb question, but how exactly do I remove the cap from the fuel tank? I've removed the two clamps from the rubber hose, but I don't quite see how the cap assembly comes off.

Thanks in advance.

There are two types...those before TS60001, and those after. The earlier type had some kind of treaded extension arrangement IIRC, and the later type was all one piece and just lifted out once the hose clamp was loosened.

If this is a TR3A & if it is pre-TS60001 then you should be able to just unscrew the whole upper chrome assembly. There will be a chrome ring under there and possibly some gaskets or such depending on who got there before you and what they did.

On mine I made a gasket or 2 so when it was threaded down tight the release ear ended up in the desired position (you want it pointing towards the driver's side).

There were actually two types that 'unscrew'. Look (or feel) up inside the car under the scuttle where the cap extends through the scuttle. If you see flats like a giant nut, you need to keep them from turning while you unscrew the cap.

On one type of cap, the 'nut' is part of the lower pipe, so just having the pipe still clamped to the tank may hold it strongly enough. But on the other type, it is just a nut, so has to be held directly. ISTR I used a large pair of channel-lock pliers.

Thanks guys. It is pre-TS60001, so I take a look underneath a bit more closely and see what I can find. I have some "quality time" scheduled for the old girl over the long weekend, so I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.
