front window trim

Hello all, I am about to install the trim around my 74' spitfire windshield. Does anyone have suggestions on how to install this without damage or headache? The tech support at moss said it is a difficult install.

are you talking about the metal trim on the outside of the windscreen, that goes in the rubber gasket or the plastic trim that goes around the frame on the inside of the car?

If your speaking of the plastic trim that goes inside the rubber gasket.... Try coating the rubber with some dishwashing soap first then slip it into the groove :laugh:

I'm talking about the trim on the outside of the windshield. I'm doing a dry run while the window is out and it is a bear! Is there a tool to make this easier?

Last time I had a spit (20 odd years ago) I carefully bent a coat hanger into a loop to help. It didn't help much - that trim is indeed a bear to install. Agree completely with the soap - lubricant will help avoid any damage to the seal.

There has been discussion that the trim was installed onto the gasket and then the windshield installed, at the factory. Never seen conclusive proof of this. Those that have done it this way (not many) have sworn it worked out far more easily.

Do beware of the plastic replacement trim pieces. They tend to shrink with time, leaving a gap that is larger than the two clip on covers.

A couple of tips:

Let the rubber gasket sit outside in the hot sun for an hour or so, get the rubber hot. Makes it far easier to manipulate;

> Put diswashing liquid on the area where the trim goes, makes it slippery and easier to get the trim into.

> Tegler's site has a good tutorial, use the link in the post above.

Use all the tricks, you'll get it in!

I replaced the gasket with a new one then, I used a rubber mallet and soap.
Worked like a charm, just be careful not to whack it to hard
