Front wheel bearing grease packing

Part of the reason I like the stock bearings is because they allow the use of the distance piece (between them) which I believe acts as a stiffener for the front axle.
Remember, with the stock ball-type bearings, the axle nut gets torqued up pretty tight, firmly clamping the distance piece between the bearings. Can't do that with roller bearings.

Your mileage may vary.

X2, That's my belief too. They use that method to stiffen carbon fiber rifle barrels.

Besides, they roll easier.

If folks are so concerned about slop and cheap like me, reuse your stock bearings and have your distance piece shortened. You could trim to fit (on a lathe of course) or go undersize and shim it out.

Miss Agatha is running bearings from Moss. I have seen no probs.

The Timken XAA30205 roller bearing has a larger radius on the cone face. Fits the filet radius on the stub axles just fine. This variation of 30205s are used in Ford/Mazda transmissions. My last purchase was from Rock Auto for about $14 each excluding S&H. Used the spacer piece with shims to zero the freeplay.

Great to know Mike!!!!!

I will make a new CAD drawing to see how the seal fits on the stub surface and how the rotor centers with these bearings.

So the radius isn't right on the Moss inner ball bearing. Great--I never checked that. Something else I will have to tear down!

Kurt.

This has turned out to be another in a very long line of disappointments. The Timken XAA30205 roller bearing would have fit. just five minutes ago I received a reply from Timken that this bearing has been discontinued and the replacement they suggested does not fit.

It may be that Rock Auto has some still in stock so I would suggest anyone needing bearings to consider that possibility.
