I finally started working on my 71B this weekend. First things I need to do are the brakes and bearings.
After taking off brakes and rotor, I noticed when grabbing the swivel axel and trying to move it up and down there is a very small amount of play.
To fix this can I do what Moss call the "Major Suspension Kit #264-408. Or do I need to do more than that?

Depends on how far you want to go...how are the pads holding your suspension beam to the car?
 
I am not sure what pads those are. Do you mean the square pads?

From what I see, most of the rubber bushings look cracked. I figure since I have it apart and the car is not moving I want to replace the majority of bushings etc.

Any suggestions.

Yup! Might as well go for the poly bushings, get the kingpin bushes and new wheel bearings... rotors aren't *that* expensive... steering rack boots... rod ends...

It's a strong LBC owner who can just replace the originally intended bits without "falling down the well" so-to-speak. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yep, after you disassemble everything, drop the beam from the car so you can put red poly pads on top of it!
 
...and pray the left rear bolt isn't welded in by the exhaust heat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
...& if it is, don't hit it with a hammer - disconnect nut from the bottom & leave the "stud" in the frame rail.

I can see I am gonna need it. I do have good backup though, the SWMBO says do whatever needs to be done.

This is my first project, so I am gonna go all the way I can.
 
while the suspension is apart and the bushings removed, i would again check for play at the swivel arm. there could be wear at the fulcrum. let's hope not but replacing the bushings with play at the fulcrum will only mean trouble later on.
 
That is what I expect.
I will get everything apart and have all my replacements, and bam /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif more stuff to buy.

i am also installing (eventually) the red poly bushings, i would be interested in your results and any installation problems. i will tell you to be careful at the flange ends of the bushings since they are not as flexible as the rubber bushings and can be easily cracked. i know since i already damaged one trying to remove it after a first fit.
 
Luckily today I had the time to work on dropping the suspension.
Went pretty good, only problem was by the time I got it dropped it was a little dark. Unfortunately I didn't see the clips that held the brake lines to the crossmemeber. They got pulled down a little but I think they will be okay.
Just happy I had time to get it all out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Now to find time to take it all apart. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif But all in all feeling pretty good!
