Front suspension rebuild revisited

Front suspension is moving closer to the top of my list, so back to the spring compressor....
When I have it in place, Am I lowering the whole "pan" from the bottom of the A arm? Or am I lowering just the spring?
 
The whole pan since the spring compressor sits in the recess where the shock bolts ons.
