I was finishing some corrective aluminum welds on the front shroud and want to make sure I don't fill the wrong holes.

1. When the car was raced, someone put the leather strap across the bonnett. there are two holes on each side for the strap "tie down brackets" that i just removed. These holes are about 2" apart on each side.
2. There are also two holes closer to each other, just inside (toward the bonnett) on each side that I presume were for side mirrors? Total of 4 holes each side. If the mirrors used the inside holes, and IF the strap was used, the inside holes (mirror holes) would conflict with the strap holes.
3. If this is correct, should I fill/repair the outside (wider) holes and leave the inside (closer) holes that i presume is for side mirrors? Fill all the holes?
I hope this description is helpful for an answer. if not, i can try to explain better.

I just want to take care of this now so I can finish the front and while I have the machine set up for the aluminum welding.

thanks for any advise and help

Regards,

Doug

No Healey ever came with side mirrors from the factory so if you want to install them leave one set of holes unfilled. Your preference. Personally, I have mine mounted on the steel wings (fenders). The only stock holes in the front shroud should be for the windscreen wipers and the demister vents.

No Healey ever came with side mirrors from the factory.

Well my heritage certificate says my 66 Bkue/White BJ8 came with a set of talbot side mirrors which currently sell for $300.0 apiece..Fwiw--Keoke

It's easier to drill new holes on a finished car, than it is to fill unwanted ones.

I'd fill them all, then decide later on which ones I need for the equipment I choose to add.

My side-view mirrors are slso fitted to the steel fenders (centered above the wheel hubs).

Hey Hawkscoach,
I would just weld them all up since the only ones that should be on your shroud would be for the wipers. As for the mirrors, get the ones that mount in the front screw hole of windshield posts ( the big one at the pointed end). Works fine there and looks good too. Plus no holes in your wings or shroud.

Mike

Oh, Oh Randy, need to update your BN6's pictures - there's snow in the back ground and you sure don't have that anymore !!!

Serves to remind me of how lucky I am; will be especially comforting to look at those pictures this next February, unless I'm too busy driving the Healey!

BTW, what do you use for side-view mirrors when the sidescreens are fitted, and outward visibility is at its worst? Just sayin'...

'learn something every day. I have a 100 and don't claim to be an expert on the late (3000) cars.

If your 3000 has a bonnet strap. it's probably going to be located like mine on the aluminum shroud anchored by four bolts:

If you want to remove one of the coolest Healey features ever (right up there with louvered bonnets and folding windscreens), go ahead and fill it in. The wing mirrors, as Randy has illustrated, are usually drilled into the wings centered in the middle of the wheel well. There's lots of disagreement over the effectiveness of the wing mirrors. Do a search on mirrors. Most think the ones attached on or near the windscreen work better than the wing-mounted ones. If you go for wing mounted, look at the convex ones.
