Front Shock Upg Other & Upgs nearly done .......

Hi All -

I thought I'd let you all know of some of the winter projects nearing completion:

Front Shock Conversion (Morris Chennault)
New Bushings (x4)
New Tie Rod ends
New Brakes & Rotors (front)
Electric Fan
New "pint size" alternator
Trailing Arms (Rear)
Addition of XM Radio (discretely)
Head Lamp On Buzzer
Rpl Various Fluids

First - I owe a big thanks to Morris who placed a post probably 2 years ago asking if anyone would like to buy a front shock conversion kit from him. I did and promptly sat on my shelf. Well after a few emails back & forth, it's installed and working wonderfully. After a few spirited drives - the results from previous (warn & dangerous) is simply amazing. No rubbing or nasty clunks. A beautiful job using solid aluminum & / or steel & high quality fasteners. I'd have no problem recommending this upgrade (and remember I was version # 2; Morris being # 1) -- the guy really knows what he's doing on this.

Various other suspension items helped also -- bushings / brakes / trailing arms -- all now a pretty nice driving car !

Some of the other unique upgrades I did was an alternator. With the suspension upgrade, I could have gotten the Delphi alt back in but some serious engineering would have had to been done with the bracket. I was able to go to an alt shop (specializes in rebuilding) and get "the smallest one they've heard of". A Kubota Tractor alt kicking out 70 amps. I'll attach a pic. It's small & mightly and looks great. No crazy bracket here. Bracket to engine mount and presto ! Price ~ $120 incl bracket + new belt.

The electric fan was really cool. ~ $110 with wiring kit. 8 in with 10 blades. It uses a specialty 'zip strip' that fits through the rad fins and a sensor off the top of the radiator:

It's hasn't been that hot yet, but I had an issue when I stopped for a traffic light that my temp would shoot up. I am hoping this solves that.

Lastly, the trailing arms on the back were simply not working (too old). I did my own version of this:

with the help of Speedwell. A little difficult getting the right parts; but ~ $50.

The goal here is to be able to drive to MG2012. I have family (both sides) within 20 miles of the place and frankly, have always wanted to drive those hilly / mountainous roads.

Need to solve my legroom issue you might have seen in prior posts and I am awaiting a new firewall mounted gas pedal and think that will make enough of a difference that I can make the trip from Cleve, OH w/o feeling like a pretzel.

Happy to answer any Q's. No one item cost a prohibitive amount and all have made a pretty solid upgrades in my opinion.

Alternator Picture .....

It's really not much bigger than a big can of beans or a big beer can.

Agreed, too nice for stock wheels.

Re: Front Shock Upg Other Upgrades nearly done .......

Looking great George! Interested to see how you did your XM..thinking of installing my Sirius once I get mine back together.

Re: Front Shock Upg Other Upgrades nearly done .......

XM Radio, best thing I ever added to Bugsy. Between Radio Margaritaville and the Blues Channel that's all of the tunes I need. I wired in an extra SPDT switch mounted to the left hand bottom dash bracket. In one position normal power goes toteh radio and radio comes on with ignition. In the other 12VDC power direct to the radio from the battery always on. No more burnt points from trying to listen to the radio with the engine off. Mini switch is totally out of sight. XM can be wired up the same way. BTW XM at least mine, runs on 6Volts but I also discovered there is a default circuit in the radio that will tolerate 12 VDC without going through the cigarette lighter plug.

Dear 64rocksprite -

I did my own paneling so yours could be different. I mounted the bracket on the panel in front of the gear shift. I ran the antenna, radio wire (think iPod cable) and cig adapter behind said panel and wired a aux cig adapter under the dash to the radio circuit (keyed) so I would not see the giant adapter hanging out of the dash (& forget to remove at a light). Antenna is magnetically mounted to the rear wind screen but could have easily been ran behind the paneling to the read of the car or trunk area. Wires underneath the door trim and respective panels.

Can't believe I did not do this sooner. It's been great.

Kellysguy -

I would like to get the minilites. I think it'd be a great look. Something else always competes for my 'upgrade dollar' (other Sprite repairs, boat, wife -- not in that order).

Some day .....

What does Upg mean?

Beautiful car. I'm in the process of rebuilding my MK1 and have thought about similar upgrades. Would you mind sharing your parts list and supplier for the rear trailing arms?
