I received new front shocks (not koni) for my TR4. I checked their resistance and found that they both had dead spots when reversing direction. This isn't normal...right? My Armstrong Super Blue (vintage '86) shocks feel as good or better as these asian made units. I guess koni is the only quality choice we have. Correct? TIA.

I'd go with Koni's or Spax.
 
I have Spax and they work fine for me.

With your new shocks, cycle them a couple of times and see if the problem with the dead spot goes away. Not sure of how the internals work, but I found that when I picked one up that had been sitting for quite a while it had minimal resistance on the downstroke, but a couple of pumps and it worked smoothly in both directions.
 
I get old and forget stuff that I knew before...:smile:

I didn't have the units in the vertical position when testing. Once vertical, they did fine after a few cycles. I'll have to re-test my Armstrong now..:smile:
