Front Seats Questions???

I just took my BJ7 front seats out of a bag for the 1st time since I had an upholstery shop recover them about 18 yrs ago. (slow project) I have a couple of questions. There are 3 tabs on the seat frame?? Do they somehow connect to the seat base? Did the upholstery guy cover some holes? Also can someone please tell me what the bolt is like that holds the seat back to the frame. I have the chrome washers and and dome nuts I am just not sure what the head of the bolt looks like. I have searched the forums a lot looking for some pics so I get it right and don't ruin the leather.

Thanks,
Pete

Hi Pete,

I have a BJ8, and I think the seats are the same.

The three tabs, at the rear of the seat frame do two things. They keep the seat bottom from rising up in the rear as it slips under the tabs. And they support the seat back as the back rotates on the bolts and sits on top of the tabs.

The bolts you refer to are welded to the seat frame, sticking outwards. The originals on mine were a round disc head, spot welded in place. I just took a SS bolt, turned the head in a lathe and welded it in place with a MIG welder. They slip through holes in the upholstery and frame of the seat back and the washers and acorn nuts secure it. You should be able to feel thru the upholstery where the holes are in the seat back frame. I haven't installed my upholstery on the seat backs yet, and the Moss Video doesn't say anything special about puncturing the holes and mounting the seat back to the frame.

I hope this helps.

BJ8 - Paint is almost done....

:iagree: I have a BJ7 and I agree with above. I might add that if you go to a local hardware store ask for a "furniture bolt". It has a round flat head as described. It may even come in chrome, worth asking. Furniture bolts are tempered and are much harder than a regular bolt and can take years of raising and lowering of the seat back.

If your upholsterer hasn't already I'd cover those tabs in the rear. The seat back itself rests on those tabs and in short order will wear through the leather.
