Front Hub Removal

Starting to rebuild the front suspension on my '79 and I knew I as going to run into a problem on the hub. I have the spoked rims with the single "nut" in the center and my manual does not describe this kind of disassembly.

In the center of the hub assembly is a hole with a plug and a threaded bolt coming out. (The manual describes a metal dust cover which would be easier to remove if I had it.) I expect the castellated nut is behind that. Looks like the threaded bolt has been mangled by prior work and I want to make sur ebefore I dig in. I want to waste more money on replacement parts, like I ususally do

I expect I need to rethread the bolt and attach a slide hammer to remove that plug. Is this right? Is there any easier or better way to do this? I dont have a slide hammer and would have to rent/buy one.

I was just going to post - I got it and it was easy.

My local Harbor Freight is my friend! At $15 slide hammer and vise grips and I got it off with three tugs. Life works then you have the right tools.

Thank you for the article link.

Good luck on the rebuild, as a matter of fact I crossed this same bridge today. I got the nut off with a pair of channel lock pliers (I have sockets that fit too, but these were closer). Then I just used a 3-armed puller and the hub popped right off. Now if you happen to know how to get the annoying little dowel pin that holds the lower trunnion pin in, that would be helpful!
