Front hub noise.

Left front hub squeak seems to be coming from the bearing. I jacked the car up and the wheel has a lot of bearing slop. Perhaps the DPO did not follow correct precedures in servicing or reassembling the hubs. I'll take them apart tomorrow if I can jury rig the cap removal tool.

One of the club magazines had an article on the front bearings. Between that and the book I hope to figure it out. Anyone have further wisdom to add?

I used a piece of M 20 threaded rod, bored a hole at one end and tapped it out to the correct thread size to suit the cup. Then with a large washer made of plate and a nut removal of the cup was easy. What I found tricky was putting the correct amount of shims in to limit the end float, I have a BJ7 and I am sure that anything earlier than this will be the same, you will find that the shims are like large washer but very thin, the difficulty comes in fitting them over the increased diameter of the stubb axle, I had to do it by trial and error but the correct way is to over shim it, measure the end float and reduce the shimming by the amount of float, I now have a dial guage so next time it may be easier. I feel that a precision mandrel to slip over the threads of the stubb axle would help to install the shims. If you have a BJ8, the shims are smaller all together so the stubb axle must be a little different and installation may be easier.

Say I have some shims for hub freeplay adjustment if you want some.

What you have got there is probably end play.

I couldn't get the old ID to work on this new location. Was too lazy for a long time to set it all up again.

BTW, Woodies on the Wharf was fantastic! 204 cars signed in. Lots of new ones we have not seen before. Perfect weather, too.

I'll let you know how the Healey hub project goes. I suspect the bearing is damaged.
 
You will probably be best off just replacing both inner and outer bearings. This is a really straight forward job. The free play must be adjusted with shims (as you probably already know). To get the hub grease cap off I just use a bolt and two nuts and pull with vice grips (some rocking motion). I am going to Cliff Side Beach this weekend to do some body boarding with my daughter. Perhaps I check in on you if your about. If I remember I'll grab the shims. I adjusted this dry then greased and assembled, alot less messier.
