Front Brake Dust Shields

The bottom flange on my front brake dust shields is corroded out. It looks lkie the bottom of both flanges are flat instead of curved, and from what i can tell it seems as though there was an elongated drain slot in this area. Is this correct or was the car dropped onto the dust shields and they have just corroded out. It seems that there should be some provision for drainage.

Neils,I am not sure about what you see. But the dust shields were open ended on one side to the best of my knowledge.---Keoke

Neils,
The dust shield should look like the attachement.

Here's a few more pictures showing the inside and outside of the shields since Lin's picture is chopped off at the bottom. As you can see there is no provision for drainage at the bottom but since there is a gap between the rotor and shield any water will quickly drain.

John

Thanks. I realize that the dust shields are open on one side, at the 3 o'clock position. My problem is that the dust shields have both corroded at the 6 o'clock position, and appear to be out of round at this point. I was wondering if as this is the lowest part of the shield that brake dust and moisture accumulated there and caused it to corrode. It appeared from my old dust shields that there may have been an elongated oval slot along the lip of the dust shield at the 6 o'clock poisition - but it was difficult to tell properly due to the corrosion at this point. The rest of the dust shields are solid with only surface rust. The lip/flange I am referring to is about 1/2 inch wids and runs around the edge of the shield. As I have been advised that replacement shields don't fit properly I would like to repair mine to as close to original as possible. I hope this clarifies where I am interested in. As well as I can tell from the pictures posted by John Loftus there was not meant to be a hole. Is this correct?
Thanks

Neils,

The flange/lip on mine are smooth ... no elongated dimples or holes. Who knows as to the cause of the corrosion .. road salt? .. paint damage during front end work? .. accumulated brake dust/road grime/water? Once you do the repairs (or find a good set on ebay or through the dealers that have old parts) apply a good coat of primer and modern paint and those parts should be well protected for a very long time.

Cheers,
John
