Hi Ramajon,
There is an article here about uprated brakes, but I can’t get the entire document to come up (maybe you can). I have emailed the author asking if he can send me a copy. I’ll also ask for his permission to post the article here in the Knowledge Base. I’ll keep you posted as events unfold.

thats the goal...to change from drums on the front to disks

Easiest way is to get the brackets/calipers from a MKI/MKII 3000. They are a direct bolt-on to your existing stub axles. The hubs (splined anyway) are available new, as are the rotors.

That's what is on my car.

This was a recent topic on the modified heleys yahoo group. I posted a measured drawing of a bracket for a disc brake setup. It's in the files section. There are a few other concerns such as the master cylinder - drum brake cars had an integral reservoir - I'm not sure there is enough fluid available to operate the calipers with the stock cylinder. Later cars had a remote reservoir with more fluid. The easiest change would be rotors, brackets, calipers, and master cylinder from a MK1 - MK2.

i found the diagram and will try to attach it to this post for this forum...thanks and brilliant! keep on shakin

Hi Ramajon,
Thanks for the bracket dimensions. I’ve been in contact with Magnus Karlsson. He sent me the full Uprated Brakes article, which I have posted in the Knowledge Base on this Website.

This bracket could be modified to accept an aftermarket 3 1/2" mount caliper, vented rotor, etc. I'd suggest a mockup in wood to check the fit. The original hubs will also need to be changed out, since they have 4 studs instead of five.

Wilwood, Outlaw, probably others have aftermarket calipers for 3 1/4" and 3 1/2" mounting centers. You'd have to be sure they center up on the rotor and fit inside your wheel. These two companies have good drawings of their products to help see what might work. I decided to stick with original parts as much as possible and not do much re-engineering. Also, can 48 spoke wires work with a disc brake setup?
