TR2/3/3A Front Brake Caliper Shims

Are the shims always to be used one on each side or only used if necessary to make sure the rotor is centered? If it is shim as required do you just "eyeball' it to see if it's centered or trial and error with the shims?:uncomfortableness: I understand that dental floss is a good way to make the shims stay put.
 
Only as necessary to center the rotor. Some of the cars I've taken apart have had several (like 4 or 5) on each side; others none. They seem to have been something of an afterthought, so I'm guessing that most earlier cars didn't need them.

I'd say do a trial assembly with whatever shims you took out, then measure how well the rotor winds up centered in the caliper. The only real danger is that the rotor can move side-to-side somewhat under hard cornering; if it is way off-center it could possibly rub the caliper. Likely not a problem with the way most people drive their TRs these days :D
 
Pretty easy to make more shims from thin sheet metal if you find you need more or different from what you have on hand. Two tries may get it done - one a guess, then measure and see how much more adjustment you'll need. Yeah, dental floss can hold all the bits in place until they are bolted up, then easily cut and pulled out.
