From DC to Hyannis -- Suggestions on Route?

Howdy all!

My girlfriend and I are off to Hyannis tomorrow. We're leaving DC at 7am and have to make the 8pm ferry -- I'm pretty sure this leaves us plenty of time. That said, I would love wisdom from fellow East Coasters on the fastest route, and things to avoid. Alas, we're taking our Jeep, rather than any of the LBCs.

Thanks!

Which ferry?

From DC-proper I95 is the most direct route, but plan - at all costs - to avoid the GW bridge in NY (you can listen to the radio and see if it happens to be open, but you can get stuck in traffic for hours there). Just before you turn east to go across the GW plan to go west on 80 to take the GSP north to 287 and the Tappanzee Bridge. That might not be a 100% smooth ride either, but it'll avoid the GW Bridge mess, the Bronx, etc (the last time I tried that I sat for 2 hours just to SEE the GW bridge, after that there was another jam that took 40 minutes to get through).

The rest is easy - I95 straight across to Providence, then 195 to the Cape. Take the Bourne Bridge, cut up to 6 (it's faster than staying on 28), and you're about 20 minutes from Hyannis.

Thanks so much! I'm going to Nantucket -- I spent almost every summer there from before I can remember to about 1982, and haven't been back since. I've heard it's changed a lot -- when I was a kid, the elite when the Vinyard, and the funky people went to Nantucket, and very few of them at that. Now I hear it's quite built up, and caters to the jet set. I guess we'll see!

What he said. No major road projects going on that I know about. Have fun.
