This exact same phenom occurred to my '74 Midget. I had to have her towed once, after cutting out after a long-ish highway drive.
The cutting off problem was "vacuum lock" of the fuel pump: I had replaced the original, vented gas cap with a Moss replacement that was NOT vented. Thus, as gas slowly flowed from the tank it created a vacuum in the fuel system that caused the fuel pump to seize, cutting off fuel flow to the carbs.
After I figured this out (it's described in the SU manual), I drilled a very small hole in the gas cap and the problem was solved.
