Find some slugs, snails and worms- he'll love them (or Nightcrawlers if you want to go "hi-brow"!!).

Tomatoes are a no-go. Didn't care fer 'em at all. Haven't found worms and HIM at the same time yet.
 
I had a gopher once, great turtles. They're endangered ya know. I stopped today to help a really big beautiful box turtle across the road. I was tempted to take him home, but my mower found too many of them here already. Man I ~HATE~ that !!!
