I found what appears to be a 1963 TR3.

The guy just wants it gone.

Looks complete somewhat, from the pics.
He says the motor is laying next to the car.
First one there with cash can have it, any cash.

Problem is it is a 7 hr drive away.

DO I go get it? and how do I explain it to the wife

Assure her that this is indeed a very shrewd move on your part (which may very well be correct).

Personally, I made sure that 'any car he wants' was in the wedding vows (in exchange for me promising to never throw up on her shoes).
 
Because it is very rare. ISTR that TR3 production ended in '62, so you'll have the only one.
 
Sell off one of the octagonal cars at the same time, and she'll probably not even notice!

"1963" TR3Bs aren't as rare as you'd think, since the dealers would generally "update" the paperwork to whenever the car actually sold to an end user. My 1965 Sports 6 was made early in 1963.
 
Randall is again correct. My TR3B is titled as a 1963 and it was built in '62.
I would check the VIN. It could be TR3A that sat on the car lot even longer than a year.
