Today I spoke with the man I bought my Austin Healey from in Fresno, CA in August 1963. I was seventeen and hot to trot to buy a sexy British sports car. He was 28, married and expecting a child, so he needed a larger car. A perfect situation. $1,800 traded hands and I drove the car home. The fellow is now 87 years old, but he remembered clearly how my father did not want me to buy a sports car. I sent him some photos of the car from the time I first bought it (photo below) to a recent shot of my 3 year old grand daughter riding in the car. It was a wonderful conversation and he thanked me for taking such good care of the Healey. He even offered to buy it back if I wanted to sell. That made my day.

Reid, I’m not sure it was for him or his 57 year old son who was the reason he had to sell the car in the first place. In my effort to track the original owner down, I talked to his son and asked if he was aware his birth was the reason his parents had to sell the Healey. With some exasperation, he replied,”Yes, I’ve heard that story all my life”. The original owner also told me it was his wife that drove the car mostly and when he suggested they trade it in for a Healey with roll up windows, she said no, she liked the side curtains.
