Ford T9 gearbox questions

Greetings,

I've found a donor source for a ford T9 gearbox. I plan to use it with either the Canley or Frontline 5 speed gearbox conversion kits for a GT6 Mk III. My question is, what donor gearbox do these conversion kit suppliers use? I understand there to be differences in the input shaft length (short or long) and I want to get the one that will properly match the adapter plate and other items in the conversion kit. Also, does anyone know if the donor gearboxes come from a 2.3 or 2.8 Sierra, or from a 2.9 Scorpio? I plan to have some intake and exhaust porting work done, install a mild street cam, and hope to convert to Weber 40's and use a different, more open exhaust header than the original cast iron one. In short, I'd like to match the gearbox as best as I can to the output of the engine.

Many thanks,

Hymodyne

I've not done this, so I coan't give you a definative answer, but I can put you in the direction of someone who has. For instance, Andre with his MkI GT6 [url5 Speed Gearbox Conversion]https://www.gt6.ca/5speed/index.html[/url]

There are basically 4.

1. As fitted to Sierra/Capri/Granada 4 cyl. Wide ratios, short input shaft. This is the one the kits for Spitfires/Midgets use.
2. As Fitted to Sierra/Capri/Granada 2.8 V6. Closer ratios (taller 1st anyway) and long input shaft. Harder to find, pricier and often knackered.
3. As fitted to Granada 2.3, same ratios as the 4 cyl but longer input shaft - beware this one if looking for the closer ratio 2.8 version!
4. Fitted to diesels and P100. Catastrophically low first gear and may be available in both input shaft sizes. You don't want it!

Note that the input shaft length may not be an issue as most of the extra length on the long ones is the pilot bearing spigot which is easy enough to lop off.

I've been told the ones that come from Merkur XR4Ti are the correct ones. I hope so because that's the one I bought. Now I just need to get someone to make me an adapter plate for less than the $300+ Frontline wants for one.
