Any information?I've got a '94 Dodge Dakota that
needs a few things.As we're taking care of our 4-1/2-
year old Grandaughter,an Explorer might make more sense.
Yes,I do know the transmissions are a weak area (we had-
a '93 Aerostar before).

I don't know anything about Fords these days. All I can tell you is I just put a new automatic transmission in my Dodge Durango @ 140,000 mi. All I will say is OUCH! {price wise}
I also have a 95 Dakota inline 4 cyl, it leaks oil into the radiator! How, I can't figure out. There is NO water in the oil {In the pan} {this truck has less than 60,000 miles on it}
Needless to say ..... NO more Dodges for me.
 
I'm on my second one. I love them. Never had a problem. I drive it all winter through ice and snow, over mountains and hills. Its my favorite expressway vehicle. Never had a transmission problem. 19-21 mpg depending on the season. Feels like a car on the inside. Between the two of them, i've owned an explorer for 9 years.
 
We had the Mercury equivalent (Mountaineer)and had very few problems with it.

We had no problems with the transmission or transfer cases (all-time 4WD).

I would recommend this vehicle.
 
Rick I agree ...have 2002 Mountaineer...but did have the 140K 3rd gear out problem....$2500 for the new trans, which was a good deal....an Explorer pulled in right behind me same thing...but still recommend
 
I have a '98 Explorer since 2000 and no transmission problems. I also have several friends with Explorers and none have ever complained of transmission problems. Before this I had a '87 Aerostar and its transmission was good for 70k miles as everyone claimed. At 70k I had it rebuilt and at 140k it went again. That's when I got the Explorer. I understand it is the same transmission but it has been upgraded and improved several times since the Aerostar original.
 
My brother in law had a 92 with 130K and no mechanical issues that he just got rid of (donated to a guy at a boat yard where it's still going strong) and bought a new one last fall. He loves them.
 
I had a '92 Explorer Sport, 5-Speed. Pretty decent vehicle. Never in the shop once except for an exhaust system.
 
I had an first year Explorer (marked a 91 although I got in July of 90) and it ran for about 15 years until the manual trans finally got the point it would only move with the clutch pedal depressed. I really liked it, but I no longer needed such a big car when I retired from working. I do not know anything about them with automatics though.

Dave! They sure changed the body lines of the Explorer/Mountaineer over the years....looking at the picture you posted!

If someone knows of an HONEST deal on one - 4 doors,
automatic,cloth interior,please let me know.I'd like to
find a nice one,before I put more money into the Dakota.

Sorry...I sold the 2002 Mountaineer about 6 months ago. Got $4000 for it; it had 130k on it. I bought it in 2004 with about 30k on it. The wife now has a 2006 GMC Envoy Denali.
