It was the "sporty" hatchback version fo the Escort. I believe they were a little heavier than the standard car so didn't offer a performance advantage. They were avaliable with turbo motor for a few years (so was the lighter Escort GT). Rarely seen these days. Even normal Escorts are a rare sight athough I remember them being everywhere when new. A neighbor of mine has a rather sad looking red one like this:

There is a reason you don't see them around anymore. They were horrid when new and hopefully the majority have now been bailed.

Back in high school, I had a competitor ro the EXP, an '81 Dodge Omni 024 in, of course, black and silver. I loved that car. If a decent one comes my way, I will own it...even though it was lame.
It, however, had a couple of advantages on the EXP- a back seat for one, and the old 2.2L for another. Why is the 2.2L an advantage? because a 2.2L turbo will bolt right in and with the right work will make gobs of power in a light (though flexible) platform.

My uncle had a powder-blue EXP. It had a four-speed tranny. Drove it for years. I used to ride with him from Seattle to Portland on occasion, and that car was so loud, so cheap and uncomfortable. He got about 150,000 miles off of it before it self-destructed.
The lowest-end Nissan he replaced the EXP with lasted nearly 300,000 miles.

Those used the CVH family of Ford engines, known for their harshness in use. (It was said by some that CVH stood for "Continuously Very Harsh".
Those engines are still used in SCCA "Spec Racer Ford" race cars.
My step dad just purchased last year an extremely tidy Escort of that type, with only 20,000 miles on it. It is like from a time warp, but still pretty terrible. Some time in the 80's Ford switched to selling Mazda 323 chassis as escorts. They were better. They look about the same, but the body is rounder.

Oddly enough, when I was a young pup fresh out of college, I was in the market for a new car. I liked the EXP with the handling option and could get a discount through my Dad. I opted however for a new 1980 MGB instead. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Well, the Fiesta was once the hot car in Showroom Stock Sedan racing. That 1600 Kent motor is easy to hop up. The car is light. The tub is stiffer than a Rabbit, particularly around the front suspension mountings (there is a reason that they sold all those frame braces for VW's)Dual webers a Formula Ford head, and a cam, your Fiesta is in business, to the tune of 140 horseporer or so. More than 100 horses with a stock looking carb and intake.
I like them.

My mom had a dark blue 1983 EXP it was a really nice car. I remember throwing a bean bag chair in the back and taking my girlfriend to the drive in movie...and one time forgeting to clean out all the beer bottles...aaahhh, those were the days. Unfortunately it was rear-ended one night with a mere 125,000 miles on the speedo.
I also had a high school friend with a later turbo model, it was black on black with black tinted windows (it looked almost evil), and he made it reasonably quick for the times.

I had one, I liked it. I thought it was a stable platform. had trx tires, stuck to the corners. my son borrowed it at college, one of the 14 cars he destroyed in 5 years of college (some twice -- i repaired a 4runner three times from his abuse( two head gaskets and a clutch)).
