Forced Induction for Spridgets?

Aloha,

Just wondering if anyone has ever seen a turbocharged or supercharged A-series engine in a Spridget.

Its a slow day at work today.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you're not very impressed with forced induction engines in Spridgets. I'm making that observation based on your puking smiley.

So, is it just forced induction in general that you don't like? Or, was it just a really bad setup?

No personal experience, but I have heard that the Judson Superchargers for them are ticky, difficult to set up, and don't provide that much boost. Agian, this is all hearsay so there

I remember reading an article in Moss Motor's "British Motoring" about a guy who had a '70s vintage Rajay turbo with a single SU on his '74 Midget. He also had a "big valve" Mini racing head on it.

As I recall, it was finicky to get set up, and there were some melted pistons, but once it was sorted, it was quite quick. However, there was always a fair amount of lag. From the pictures, It was really a clean setup.
 
I put a Judson blower on a Sprite in 1962. Nearly a year of messing around, no noticeable power gain.

The great pumping losses & friction in the Judson caused mixture heating to the point that there was little gain.The external total loss oil supply to the blower reduced the fuel octane rating. It was noisy & required a lot of maintenance.

Maybe a different design blower would have been more successful, but I went on to other projects.

Trevor, everyone elses comments pretty well sum up my experience with forced induction. I can make a lot of reliable horsepower with the money and effort that a turbo or blower setup would cost.
