I have a beautiful '67 MKI that I am performing a O/D upgrade on. This car is car no. 128082, produced in 67 as a 67 model; but produced after the introduction of reverse lights.

Question: the MKI trans w/ O/D I intend to install has no provision for a reverse light switch. Anyone know if the reverse light switch can be adapted to a three synchro trans w/ O/D ?

Thanks, Dave.

Hmmmm, never thought of that...my '67 w/OD has backup lights & they work - but it came that way from factory as best I can tell...

....my '63 that's getting an OD doesn't have backup lifghts....another wiring question....& I need to go look at my early OD that's sitting in a corner to see if I have the same situation with it.

Oh my, Tony admits to something he did not think of. Wonders will never cease. Can't wait to see whats next =P.

;>P....psssssssssssssssssstttttt, yourself Jack me bucko! hehehehe

Tony, was there short period of time when they produced the MKI's with reverse lights and O/D. These units must have has a provision for the reverse switch. But I would think the production volume would be quite small. So, who knows, maybe during the transition from MkI's w/ reverse lights to MkII's there were no O/D cars ? Or is there out there somewhere a few 3 synchro O/D trannys w/ reverse lights ?

Upon REALLY reading you reply I see you answered that question. Sorry. So they did produce 3 synchro O/D's with reverse lights. There can't be very many of them. The one I obtained for this swap was hard enough to find. I can;t imagine trying to find on of the few that had reverse lights. Sounds like you have a rarity, Tony.

Dave.

I'm going to the garage - be right back

Dave - my early OD that's earmarked for my '63 car also has no provision for the backup lights - not a problem for me as my '63 doesn't have them (I didn't have to think about it! hehehe)

When I get things cleared out around my '67 GT, I'll jack it up & look at the tranny for you (might be a few weeks as the GRM car is on jackstands right next to ti)

My '67 GT has backup lights but the previous owner installed an LH OD transmission so I can't visually check where the switch would have been. However, the original unit with the car was a 3-sync unit so at some point there must have been a switch. Now whether that switch was also on 3-sync OD models I can't say.

I do have a 3-sync OD sitting in my garage. Any idea what the switch might look like? I'd be happy to inspect mine to see if it has one. It's going in a '65 so I won't need it.

Steve,
Thanks, but I don't need the switch itself. Have one. What I need is a place to install it on the new O/D tranny. Apparently they made three configurations of the MKI tranny.
1. 3 synchro non O/D (w/ and w/o reverse switch; plug used in non reverse light cars)
2. 3 synchro w O/D, no reverse light switch
3. 3 synchro w O/D, w reverse light switch

I was not sure they made No.3 But, evidently they did. Tony has one.

I guess my car will end up with non-operational reverse lights. Oh well, such is the nature of the beast.

Tony: does your 67 w/ O/D have the vacuum O/D switch as originally installed ? Would be interested in pic of the attachment of the vac line to the intake manifold.

Thanks, Dave.

Lemme look..think so

I know the switch sohould be mounted at the bottom rear of the tranny, but could you top mount a micro switch that would contact when you moved the shift lever over into reverse?

You could, but you might want to get one with a spring lever... The shifter in mine has a little bit of play when it's in gear, so you want to account for that.
