I would think the heat would counteract the work hardening.
 
I agree with Mike, just got back from a short spin with Agatha. Tomorrow morning I'll be detailing her AGAIN. With dollars like that can't skip a beat in maintenance. :}
 
Pardon my ignorance, but do all M's have the bonnet hinged in front like this? I do not recall ever seeing the hinges right over the radiator...

Yep, all BN1's and BN2's and 100M's have a front hinged bonnet ! Changed to rear hinged with the six cylinders

I looked for that bent cross-brace and couldn't tell. Wasn't that to get the cam in/out? I've heard of some not knowing and straightening it out!

Yep, that was how the cam was accessed. Imagine a few of those have gone missing over the years for various issues such as front end mishaps, installing a pusher fan, or like you mentioned, someone straightening out a bent one.

Funny how a little detail like that works, Mike. I suppose not any different than a lot of other authenticity issues... but that one amuses me.
Do LeMans conversions try to bend it? :rolleye:
 
Legend has it, some of the factory 100Ms don't have the bent cross brace. Supposedly, if DMH or Geoffrey were in the shop observing the techs would pull the engine and change the cam on the bench (or engine stand) as they were supposed to. If the bosses weren't around, the techs would just bend the bracket and exchange cams in situ. That's what I've heard, anyway.
 
We rarely if ever see copper exhaust pipes down here. In the sixties the boy-racers used to have them, I thought because the copper was supposed to make the exhaust louder. That's why I thought it might be frowned on. I'll have to investgate!
