There's a guy I know in the UK, planning a trip to Chicago this spring, and he is interested if there are any military-history or good second-hand bookshops in the city that are worth a visit. My knowledge of Chicago isn't that good.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One thing that is a must-see is the U-505 exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry.

When's the last time you saw a WWII German sub in a completely indoor display? Cannot be missed.

They don't have a lens wide enough to do this display justice.

In Wheaton, a western suburb, is Cantigny. This is a museum dedicated to the First Division. It has diaramas, armor and is a great place.

I've been there. It is worth seeing.

It's on the estate of Colonel McCormick, the former publisher of the Chicago Tribune and WWI "big Red One" veteran. The 1st ID museum is great and the mansion is worth touring as well.
 
There used to be a good secondhand bookstore near Jazz Record Mart, just off Michigan Av. I don't know if either shop is still in business. Also don't know of any good military bookstores, although there is probably a good shop at Cantigny Park (I haven't been there since I was a kid, even though I went to C.O.D. and drove past every morning for two years). I know the whereabouts of more record shops than bookstores. If your friend's looking for specific books or just wants to browse for US market stuff that's harder to get in the UK, he'd be better off going to the Michigan Avenue Borders, which is enormous.

If needed I can also give the names of several good restaurants in the city and near environs. My other specialty.
