found an old picture of my uncles airplane. Thought you all would like to see it.

Don, What a beauty! My compliments to your uncle for knowing a quality aircraft! PJ

Not just quality, hand built....most of us had a hand, literally, in its construction.

Don, What year was that photo taken? Is the aircraft still in the family? PJ

Sorry Paul, it had an unfortunate meeting with the earth a few years ago.....It has been replaced with a lancair legacy...

That photo was about 1983 I think...it was in those colors during the flight certification....

You know what it is......I am waiting to see if anyone can guess it...

Looks like a P-51 kit.

Elliot, not so much a kit as a hand built one off....

Billy, I remember that one! He was lucky to walk away. The worse one though was when Jimmy Leeward crashed into the grandstands, I believe 9 spectators were killed instantly along with Jimmy! NSTB said after the investigation, worn aircraft parts along with bolts that have never been changed since the aircraft was new came apart! He was doing around 445 MPH when everything went wrong, lost a trim tab, went into an immediate quick climb pulling 17 Gs! 17 Gs will black you out and that's what the NTSB figured happened to Jimmy and being out, he couldn't direct the aircraft away from the crowd! Worst accident ever at Reno. Jimmy was a super pilot and his death was a great loss to aviation, but makes no difference how good you are if something breaks at that speed! The sin of it all was, innocent people died because of it! PJ

not the link Billy, the crash was local to me.....

I know this may be a little deep in the thread but......

The Plane you saw was 1 of only 2 Stewart S-51 planes built from plans only

and possibly the only plan built plane to Fly....

that was no kit....all hand built.....
