Fog Lights

I mounted a pair of Cibie Airport rectangular amber fogs under the bumper. They are extremely bright, require a Cibie bulb (which are expensive) and are prone to breakage in this location from rocks. After replacing the lenses twice, I finally found a product to protect the soda glass lenses. 3M makes it, forgot where I got it ( that helps ) and is about 2mm thick. Applies with self adhesive, aided with heat gun. Makes light totally impervious to rocks. I wired my fogs with the help of Dan's most excellant book using a quality relay. I think Dan offers the dedicated harness now as an accessory. Don't even think about buying a fog light harness off the shelf at an auto parts store. Every single one of them is pure junk. Start thinking bigger alternator when you start adding high-powered lights and things.

I just Googled the headlight cover material. It is marketed by a company called X-Pel (among others) as Scotchcal headlight protective material. It is not 2mm thick but about as thick as a nickle. Works wonders, PIA to apply well.

I ordered my Cibie's from Daniel Stern... very nice guy. I sourced a headlight, driving lamp and accessory harness from Dan/Mike Masters... all very nice stuff built with top shelf parts.

If I ever do a frame off, I'll buy the entire kit from Advance Auto Wire.

Good site. I played heck getting my Airports in the past. Glad to have this in my pocket.

I have always hankered for a set of Cibie Super Oscars. Melt the paint off oncoming traffic. Might need a gas generator in the boot to power them. A friend had a set on his TR3 Rallye car way back in the 60s. Even then he had to beef up his generator and run dual batteries. I am bit foggy (no pun) on how he did it as it was so long ago. Just know that it was a challenge. They did work.

We have miserable fogs in the high mountains
during the winter months. Very narrow, twisty roads.
I'm trying to keep thinking in a positive manner
that the Crypt Car will one day run.

So I mounted a pair of fog lamps below the bumper
where they will function best. On/off switch in
the dash to operate with main head lamps off.

A seperate fused circuit from Dan Masters wire
harness, (I think I stole the elec fuel pump wire;
since my TR8 is a mechanical pump)

If the Crypt Car gets sent to the Car Crusher,
I'll remove the fog lamps/

Here's a mix & Match of Hella Rallye's 100w grass burners & my orig Cibie 95's on my '88 Range Rover that were orig. on my dad's '71 Ford f150 PU till it rusted away, still shining bright almost 30yrs later. If you buy the high end Hella's the quality is very good, the Rallyes were alum housing with knurled nut adjustments. I bought a generic high beam foot switch that I ran them off through a nice heck harness & Relay.

p.s my bride surprised me with the Hellas as a Bday present! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry to intrude, but here is my set up. I used the Hella 500's in amber. Other makes look better with chrome surrounds but they are a good deal more expensive. I have a relay and independent, period correct switch gear on the console under the stereo using an old MG fan rocker switch in the spot where the rear defpogger switch would be (GT). I use them often because I like the light and it will cast a very wide beam. I can see the light on the porches of the houses lining my street when I'm driving on it, and they are about 40' from the curb.

I don't think using both light types at once in the clear dark is counterproductive, you just have an overlap. I wouldn't use both in heavy fog but that is so rare here.
Why did I get them, then you ask? Because I think it looks cool, really.
