I've been looking at fog lamps on eBay and when they're sold in pairs they almost always seem to have one with a smooth lens and one with a ribbed lens. Is this how they were mounted originally? I'm guessing the clear one is a driving lamp and the ribbed one is a fog lamp. Just curious.
 
As you said, one is a driving light and the other a fog light.
I never drive in fog so I recently added two 1950's Lucas driving lights on my Healey. Love the look of those with the chrome center.

The general thought is that fog light should be mounted low (to go "under" any low-laying fog). A driving light could be mounted higher (though most folks mount these lights at the same height).
Be sure that you have enough juice to power these lights....if you overtax your battery/charging system, the lights will draw down from the headlights and the net result will be no improvement. They do look cool though!
