Flywheel cover missing!

After driving my 2+2 around the block a couple of times
yesterday evening for the first time since I got it, it was
apparent that the exhaust was holed, so I jacked the car up
to take a look.

Imagine my dismay on seeing the following:

Now, I've been under the car several times checking the
brake hoses, suspension, sills for rust etc. and I can't
believe I didn't notice this before. Perhaps it dropped off
during my trips around the block ... but I walked around my
route and there was no evidence of it.

Anyway, my first question is: am I correct in saying that
the converter housing base plate is missing?

The parts manual shows this as C.22361. What hope is there
of sourcing a replacement?

Should the parts inside the converter be lubricated - they
appear dry :-(

The oil level in the transmission unit is good and the oil
is fresh, so I assume this isn't lubricated by the same oil?

In summary - how bad is this, and what do you advise?

Thanks!

How did you look inside the converter to see it was dry?

ATF is INSIDE the converter, if it's OUTSIDE, generally the front pump seal and /or pump bushing are bad.

I hope, with your exhaust noise, you weren't talking about oiling the inside of the catalytic converter, if so equipped.

The cover is just a major debris shield. I've seen folks drive General Misunderstanings for years and years without one.

I was just remarking on how dry the flywheel looked ... I haven't explored further than what you can see in the photo.

I'm relieved to hear that the cover is just a shield ... I was worried that the whole area should contain oil that had dropped out. As you can tell I have no experience with this mechanism at all!

No, just a sheild. Sorta keeps the rocks out. There is usually a drain hole or vent on the bottom, no gasket.
PANIC NAUGHT!

Now, different, the gig cast-iron US 2-speeds with a scoop on the side of the bell housing and big fins on the converter, before they figured out transmission coolers.....

You're in CA, call XKs Unlimited and see if they have a used one. About as close as you can get. Also, Welsh Enterprises in Ohio is a used Jag part meca.

Hi Larry,

Yes, I sourced one this morning from John Koish at Welsh. And very reasonably priced, too!

Thanks,
Julian
