Flasher Problem on 74B

My flasher only works when the car is moving. As soon as I come to a stop it too stops! Also, the faster I drive the quicker the flash rate. I suspect that the flasher unit is at fault, but I have no idea what it looks like or where to find it. I have a 74B. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Dom,
Try reving the engine when you stop, if they work when you do, you have a voltage problem. Does the flash rate slow if you add load, lights or heater fan for instance.
The flasher unit itself sounds as though it is working fine. It relies on the current through it (from the indicator lamps) to operate and if the voltage fluctuates then so does the current taken by the lamps which in turn alters the flash rate.
My guess is that your alternator is not regulating correctly.

Alec...is the stabilizer on that circuit? They seem to be a problem but I haven't had any experience in that area.

My '74 was doing the same thing when I first bought it. A new flasher was all mine needed. THe flasher is mounted to the firewall just over the passengers feet. It's a small metal box w/ 2 wires attached.

The flasher unit is right behind the switch, attached to the support...it is easiest to pull the whole console by removing the four screws on the sides and sliding out the radio and all as one unit. (A little PA Dutch showing there)

It is about a 15 minute operation...unless you are as easily distracted as I am when working on the LBC

no, the stabiliser is only used to supply the temperature and the fuel gauges. (Although the principal of operation is the same, i.e. a bi-metallic relay which is heated by circuit current.)

I tightened the alternator belt and that helped a little bit, butI ended up getting a new flasher unit. I now have a steady flash rate. I replaced the Lucas flasher with a Cooper 552/536. It flashes a little too slowly for my liking, but hey, it works!
