Fixing crack in rubber bumper

I recently purchased a 79 MGB, and it is in the process of painting. The rubber bumpers looked good, but I have discovered a crack about 2" long on the left side both top and bottom in the area of the recess for the parking lights. This naturally runs front to back.
The car has suffered a bump on the left front, the crack could have come from that, or could have been progressively cracking over the years, or both?
What is the best way to mend the crack, and what adhesive to use prior to putting on the flexible body filler.
Should it be drilled at the end like a metal stress crack?
Thank you for any help you all can give me.....

I HAD a similar issue, my solution may be regarded as unorthodox though
