fitting turnbuckles on "62"

Finally putting her back together after about 5 years. One mystery I've run into are the turnbuckles behind the doors. Why are the holes different sizes. What holds them on to the body? Shouldn't there be something between the turnbuckle and paint to protect the paint?

Thanks,
Walter

Turnbuckle??

Re: fitting turnbuckles on "62"

Not sure what you are referring to as "turnbuckles"??

Hah! Jack, you and I had to be posting at the same time!!!

Great minds.

Re: fitting turnbuckles on "62"

The turnbuckles are the 2 top fasteners behind each door. You know, the ones you turn to buckle the top down?

Anyway, they are held on with 2 #6 I think sheet metal screws. There wasn't anything beneath them to protect the paint, but if you fee so inclined, a bit of thin rubber would work. 2 different sized holes tells me one screw was oversized.

The ones on my car were riveted on!

OH, learned something.

Re: fitting turnbuckles on "62"

Mine were riveted on.

I sit corrected..... looked at a BE in the shop just now... indeed, riveted.

Moss cat shows screws.

Sorry

Peter

Re: fitting turnbuckles on "62"

Yes riveted but they always loosened up with rivets.
I have used #6 x 32 machine screws with a nyloc nut on the back side. They never move.
But getting to the inside to get the nuts on is no fun.
My wife gets that job because my fingers are too fat.
Buy a few extra nuts too, you will drop one or 2 trying to do this.

Now what's that rattle????

Re: fitting turnbuckles on "62"

Thanks for clarifying things Peter. I have the screws that Moss sells(6 x something) but both front holes being smaller made me wonder.

Thanks all,
Walter

Re: fitting turnbuckles on "62"

Someone probably drilled out the rear one making them larger!
