I'm at the point of putting the OD unit back on to the 3 syncro gearbox I just rebuilt, and I had done a lot of research about doing this so I was ready for the effort. I kept the splines lined up in the overdrive unit, made sure the pump cam chamfer was pointing up and the low end was toward the bottom of the gearbox, and slide the unit down on to the mainshaft.
It stopped short of going on, of course, and I could see that the pump had not yet reached the cam. Following John Twist's actions in his video, I lifted it up just a bit and pushed it back down with some force. Still stopped. I pulled the unit off and checked the splines - they were now out of phase! Argh.
My questions are:
1. How do you move the splines back in to phase? I can't get them to move independent of each other for nothing.
2. It seems like the splines are having difficulty clearing the metal band that is mid-way down the splines of the main shaft. How do you get past those?

BTW - rebuilding the gearbox itself was a piece of cake. I recommend everyone give it whack. Took me 6 hours total from beginning to end, except for the 2 hours fiddling with the stupid OD unit!
