Fitting a top myself?

So I asked my local club for some recommendations on shops to fit the new top to the MGB, and a few of the guys recommended that I just fit the top myself. Now, the only top I've ever fitted was to a '76 Land Cruiser about 16 years ago.

Is this something I should try myself, or is it best left to the pros. I've no problem paying someone to do the job right, but also don't mind diving in if I can be reasonably assured of success.

Drew...if Carla and I can do it in about four hours (including stretching, etc.) you can certainly do it. We bought an EZ Top I think it was. No real problem and it looks good.

A sunny day, some Weldwood Contact Adhesive, pop-rivets and gun...

With the stow-away top the only tricky bit is making sure the "Lift-a-Dot" receivers are all located correctly and snapped down before you stretch, center and glue the header.

You can do this, Drew. Mark a center line on the header rail and top with chalk, apply glue to mating surfaces of both, put some "craft paper" between 'em to keep the pieces from prematurely sticking: A 10" removeable piece at the middle so you can start adhering it there first, then work to the ends.

... it helps to have four hands for the task but I've done it many times alone.

Now I just need that sunny day...

I may give it a try. I do have the number of a local upholstery shop that has experience with tops as well if I chicken out. I'd like to do it myself if I can, especially since the sheer quantity of financial outflow these days has left the resources a bit thin on the ground.

I'm with Stewart. Did the same for my top cover 1/2 hour and $20
