Fitting 5/16" Steel to 5/16" Braided SS Rubber Fuel Line

BJ8 Phase I

I replaced my braided hose piece between the front and rear carb because it had degraded and was leaking and in the troubleshooting process also replaced the braided hose between the steel fuel line and the front carb. What is the brass male fitting on the 5/16" steel fuel line that connects to the approx. 20" long stainless braided hose that connects to the banjo union on the front carb of the HD8 ( BJ8) carb. I bought a replacement braided hose from Moss. Moss says the 5/16" nut is BSP threads. I tightened up the nut on the new hose and I still have a very small leak. The old hose had a stainless cone with a stainless compression nut and the new hose has a stainless nut with what looks like a brass cone? I am thinking that I may have to replace the brass 5/16 " fitting on the steel fuel line. Moss doesn't sell the 5/16" fitting but sells the complete fuel line from the pump discharge to the engine bay with the 5/16" fitting at the end. Seems a bit too much just to replace a fitting. Is that 5/16" brass fitting simply soldered or is it brazed on and what is the fitting?

John,
The original pipe from the fuel pump that connects to the flexible line at the left front wheel well is 1/4" British Standard Parallel Pipe Thread (BSPPT) and should receive the 60 degree cone with a nut. All should be brass. Someone may have replaced the flexible line already with the stainless part you removed. Stainless being harder than the brass may have scored or deformed the original threaded end. You might be able to dress the inside of the original end to accept the Moss part and not have a leak. If the end must be replaced, you could use a small pipe cutter to remove it and go with an AN6 fitting and 5/16" braided hose. Pegasus Racing and speed shops carry the AN6 parts, including clamps and covers for the braiding.

Thanks Bob, the 1/4" BSP is the 1/4-19 tpi thread, correct. The connection on the original hard line is 1/4" male so I would have to dress the OD of the fitting. I would have to use a comparable die of course. Moss sells a 1/4-26 die. Let me ask you are the specs on these dies such that I need a 1/4-19 die to dress the male fitting. My lack of experience is evident. Also I believe the compression nut on the hose end is chrome plated brass and not stainless as I stated above both on the old hose and the new.

John,
Before you do anything, go to www.batinc.net/mocal.htm This place has all kinds of information on threads and pitches.
There's a difference between Pipe Threads and Parallel Pipe Threads. The seal on the Healey lines and pipes should be Parallel, since a cone is used. When I mentioned dressing, I meant the area that the cone from the hose would come in contact with, not the threads.
