I'm watching the news as the first trapped miner in Chile being lifted up in the rescue capsule! Hope they all make it to safety soon! I can't imagine being trapped like that for so long!

I can't imagine what the ride in the cage must be like. I couldn't handle being in the MRI.

we were talking about that and then realized we wouldn't be in the mine in the first place.

Up to 8 by now - remarkable!

OK so without a hint of irony, the local newscaster just described the current person coming up as having "minor" health issues - what other kind would he have?!

Went down over 1,000 feet in a, very tight, 4 foot square 6 man cage once in a mine. Dark, very dark with no sensation of movement after starting. I don't think the ride up will be traumatic for them. JMHO. PJ

Good to see them all safely out.

Let's hope this incident compels their government to enact stricter safety standards in the mines.

Copper is good, but worth no man's life. Safety is all that matters, everyone goes home at the end of the day. :yesnod:

They were getting the 11th one out as I was coming to work. It take about an hour for each miner.

As I get ready for work #13 is on the way.

This is good news for a change, I hope all goes well.

O.K, just ~exactly~ how does one decide who's the first guy that gets to go ????

...or even the second ?????

Is it like being picked for dodge ball in school????

I wonder if the last guy will have a complex about it years from now...

I'm watching the CNN 'net stream in my engineeirng lab this afternoon (we have a mix of open labs and lab classes today).

Lots of my students are South American, so they're especially interested. This started out as a sad story but it seems like it'll have a happy ending (21 out right now).

The folks from the drilling company in Berlin, PA should be very proud. It looks to me like their "plan B" hammer-drill was the right technical choice to get the job done.

Also, the EMT that volunteered to GO DOWN in that thing before anyone else came up: that guy's a real hero!

The first few guys were chosen as "stronger" since they weren't sure of the stress the ride would cause. Once it was proven, the weakest guys came up....then the healthier remaining guys.

And yes, it's good to see something postive in the news.

actually part of the reason they had to choose above ground was that no one wanted to go first - I suspect because they wanted their friends to go first in case not all got out.

...or wanted to see if the basket would hold...

From an interview I heard, they chose the strongest first since they weren't sure that the cage would make it up trouble free and wanted to make sure that the person there would be strong enough to help if needed.

I did most of my army service in a rescue unit (fallen buildings, earthquakes etc) and am really impressed by the work the rescue team is doing. They are real heroes.

I understand that the last man up gets to be in the Guinness Book of records as being the longest underground.

I think the announcer's name was John-Peter Smit.

I heard that one had diabetes and the other had hypertension. The unofficial leader was to be the last one out. Sort of like the captain of the ship being the last one.

No, I really didn't make that up - City TV Kevin Frankish, morning news referring to the guy with hypertension.

I promise
