First time MG'er...looking at a 76...opinions?

Hello,

I am a first time MG'er and am looking at a 76 Midget. Looks very nice from the photos. I am going to view the car on Saturday. I have no problem doing the maintenance myself. I've owned several air-cooled Volkswagens. So I'm used to "quirky" cars.

From some basic research I know that the 76 used a 1500 engine from the same era Triumphs. Apparently this engine was not as bullet-proof (lower end) as the earlier 1285? The lady selling it has a bunch of paper-work, I will try to verify the engine was rebuilt at some point. How far can these 1500 engines go before needing some sort of overhaul?

She said the car has no rust. If I could get this car for $3000, would that be a good deal?

Thanks!

John

That'd be a great deal, because you're buying an MGB, that engine is a BMC B-series, and is 1800cc.
FWIW, it looks pretty good for $3k.

That's OK!
The MG forum here will happily steer you in the right direction, get you armed with the right questions and take care of you.
Still, for $3k, not a bad deal; welcome to the LBC world.

Hey Baz, I love your new avatar!

$3K for a running, apparently straight MGB... hmmm... Colorado's a "fur piece" from Florida so I'll say it's a bargain. Had it been close to me it'd get a ~terrible~ review. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

...and I'd be lookin' to borrow a trailer. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

The Fuzzy Red Dice alone are worth $1-2 assuming they come with the car.
