On the rear shelf, directly behind the cockpit , and in front of the tabs that hold the convertible top bar, there are two bolts with release tabs. These bolts are the same size as seatbelt bolts. What are they for? Keith

Yep

Yep - when you put the top down & install the boot or tonneau, they have to go over either of them...

These are really rare; I hope you already have them. I think there was a little plastic tab underneath them to prevent scratches, but it has been a while since I've seen one.

I'm working on an attractive way to plug those holes for those of you who no longer use the original seatbelt set-up. May become another GEM item. If you have any feedback while I'm working on a design I'd appreciate. Would people perfere polished stainless or black?

BTW, the same thing was used for the BGT of the time. I've had a couple sets of those trying to figure out if it is worthwhile to reproduce-my gut says no because it seems that most folks moved away from the Kangol belts to retractable belts. As far as I know, they were only used for early three point Kangol belts in 1971, but the holes in the rear deck stayed much longer. MG offer black plastic plugs to screw into these holes until the holes went away

Yes they are there, even a spare or two, and uder the lift tab next to the body is a plastic washer. New question...Do I need Kangol belts? The car is a 71 model. Keith

Gerry,

I bought stainless carriage bolts at Home Depot small enough to fit through the threaded holes but with large enough heads to cover the opening. I polished them on my bench buffer until they looked like chrome. I am pleased with the result, especially for about $2.

Actually, I believe that black tab is integral to the proper functioning of the belt...it "locks" the belt bracket to the stud...pressing down on the tab releases the pressure and allows one to remove the belt.

Rick, there is a black tab "press to release" and a large plastic washer underneath it.

Re: First stupid question. rear deck hardware 71 m

I mis-read your post. Sorry.

You can have you Kangol belts rewebbed at various businesses...Ssnake-Oyl in Texas is a popular one.

With this style of belt, there really is no "aftermarket-'bolt-on' replacement". I ordered a set of what appeared to be "clip on" belts in from Moss and returned them .... they would not attached to the rear deck correctly.

Re: First stupid question. rear deck hardware 71 m

My car came beltless. Will the right ones be tough to find?

Re: First stupid question. rear deck hardware 71 m

Ask Tony, bet he has the hardware used.

Rick, any chance you could send me a pic of the "hook" that clips to the deck lid stud? I'm going to dig through a trunk of belts, and it always seems to help if I know what I'm looking for. Keith kjkuzma@knology.net
