First start trouble rebuilt 1275

Kurt,

yes, it's hooked up with coolant and gauges. I bolted an old radiator to the front of the stand and hooked up some 1 inch rubber hose to plumb it (from Lowe's, I think it was for dishwashers).
The fan isn't lined up to the radiator and it sets a little low relative to the engine, so I couldn't completely fill it. For these reasons it seems to run hot, but I shut it off before it gets above 210. I'm gonna put an electric fan on it.

It may be as simple as needing to be completely warmed up and have the mixture adjusted properly. Plus blow all the assembly oil out of the cylinders and stuff.

I do think it is lean. I set the mixture at 2 turns out, then leaned it 2 flats when it was flooding a little. Now that the floats are correct, it may need to be richened up.

Some more tinkering and I'll see. Unfortunately, my job will get in the way for little while.

Standard disclaimer - I have not idea what I am talking about.

That said, I have read a number of things lately that make the point that the timing on our cars was calibrated for 1960's gas and that it seems to be a bit advanced for 2012 gas.

I haven't done it but I know there are ways to time the engine with a vacuum gauge.

Triple check for vacuum leaks, and be sure that the carbs are roughly synced and the linkages are snugged.

Much improvement with syncingthe carbs. I'm running an open exhaust manifold so I cant listen for an equal hiss. I can see down the venturi and look directly at piston elevation in the dashpots. When I equalized them it helped a lot.
Was making good progress then the engine shut off.
I dont have an alternator or generator or control box/voltage regulator hooked up on the engine stand, so Im thinking maybe the voltage got to low on the battery. Then I started wondering if any of my tuning issues might be related to this same thing.
What do you think is the effect of running straight battery power, and how long would it be expected to run without a gen/alt?

Fred

Got gas?

Ha ha
Yes I refilled the tank first

You should be able to run a few hours on a fully charged, good battery if all you are powering is the ignition, if you add lights and such it goes down much faster, a drove my old MGB for several days with no battery charge years ago, but then 15 minutes on the highway with the headlights on after that and it pooped out.

Of course if you had to crank a lot to get the first start up battery could be low.

Drove most of 100 miles thru New Mexico desert with a failed generator once. At night and by moonlight!!

Kurt.

While doing a little more tuning, My eyes started burning like crazy. Too rich or too lean?
Fred

Good news is that compression was 165-170 on all 4 cylinders.
The plugs were a bit black and very slightly oily, but I suspect its because the rings havent had a chance to seat.
