First gear noise

Hoping for some advice on centershift tranny. My transmission shifts very well, never pops out and O/D works perfectly. Since owning the car for 2 years has always had first gear growl/noise. From reading many posts it seems this is somewhat normal due to gear being straight cut. Removed transmission and had a very experienced transmission shop (actually the owner), open, inspect and check out the gearbox. He was surprised to see that all looked to be in very good condition. He said the first as well as all the gears were in great shape. He even checked the bearings and really cannot see a glaring reason for any noise. My question is could this be a normal whine/growl or could he be missing something due to the nature of it being out of the vehicle. I don't have a problem closing it and reinstalling it as I rarely use first gear but wanted any advice before I pick it up from him and reinstall it. If not the first gear, what else may it be? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wot? That noise isn't normal? I have a very well maintained BJ8 with 57k original miles. Have used oil and now Redline MT90, I have a similar noise in 1st. If you want to eliminate the noise, start off in 2nd... :jester:

You're ahead of the game. Ain't broke. Don't fix.

My BJ7 is a little noisy in first, but nothing to worry about, you will know when the bearings or teeth are gone, it will sound as if the gear box wants to joint you in the cockpit!
